Counting Our Blessings is a journey through the lives of 41 New Orleanians in the aftermath of the Katrina disaster. Their experiences and reflections offer a clarifying view of the assistance, promises, faith, relief, opportunities, compassion and empathy that helped to catapult them through the distress to better times. The collection works together to reveal the power of a bitter night in the deepest darkness, and it also teaches us the promise of humanity provoked into action by the sight of our fellow human beings in danger and distress. Counting Our Blessings reminds us of America and the world 20 years ago. Humanity to the rescue. Empathy and compassion on full display.

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS

As we face the dawn of days in 2025, perhaps we will be inspired by who we were then and see some value in recovering aspects of ourselves less present today. These are real stories starring our fellow Americans as heroes and New Orleanians as brave, determined and resilient victims of one of America’s most catastrophic disasters. From an international business community that in one week organized to reset the lives of colleagues in distress; to a family preparing to evacuate who make the decision to take with them two friends and their dog; to individuals and communities that provided shelter, temporary homes and friendship; to love stories that were born and families that were made. In the end, Counting Our Blessings sheds light on the stories that are not so often highlighted and gives us an intimate view of our ability to rise to the occasion of doing for others what we would like them to do for us.
